Is Mouthwash Necessary – No, not really. Here’s why?

We are all quite attentive about following our daily oral care to achieve healthier teeth. Most people never miss brushing twice a day; however, they often forget to floss daily. Some individuals have done both without neglecting the routine oral practices. It would be best to use a tongue scraper and a mouthwash for complete maintenance. But here is a real question that arises. Is it necessary to use a mouthwash to take care of your oral health? 

We understand your dilemma, especially with the list of dental maintenance tasks; using mouthwash is one of them. Those antibacterial mouthwashes claim to kill 99.9% of germs in the mouth, leading people to believe that they are essential. They did provide a long-lasting fresh breath, which makes it hard for people to resist them. However, do these truly play that crucial role in maintaining your oral health? The answer is not really. Your Toothbrush and Floss Do the Heavy Lifting

You’re already taking care of the important aspects of oral hygiene if you use fluoride toothpaste twice a day and floss frequently. Plaque is eliminated from the tooth surface by brushing. When you floss, you can get to places that toothbrush bristles can’t. Mouthwash swishing is significantly less effective than these two practices alone. Mouthwash, on the other hand, is more of a bonus feature—nice to have, but not necessary.

Mouthwash Doesn’t Stay Long Enough to Work Wonders

Mouthwash doesn’t have enough time to provide long-lasting antibacterial benefits in your mouth. The majority of people only rinse for 30 seconds or less, which gives them very little time to come into contact with oral microorganisms. Additionally, a lot of formulae that contain alcohol might cause dry mouth. This makes the situation less than ideal because, unfortunately, a dry mouth promotes the growth of bacteria.

What About Bad Breath?

While mouthwash can temporarily cover up foul breath, it doesn’t address the underlying reason. Dry mouth, struct food particles, or inadequate oral hygiene cause the majority of halitosis cases. A minty disguise can be achieved by rinsing, but longer-lasting freshness can be achieved by cleaning your tongue and drinking enough water. Cleaning is the key to long-term improvement, not rinsing.

Mouthwash Isn’t a Cure for Cavities

Fluoride, which can help prevent tooth decay, is included in some products, but it’s typically insufficient on its own. The best way to prevent cavities is still to brush with fluoride toothpaste. A false sense of security could result from using mouthwash in place of good brushing and flossing. It smells clean, but the mess is still there, much as when you spray air freshener in a messy room.
